It is an increase of just over 6,000 people compared to the first half of 2024, which had the previous record figure.

The sharp increase has put great pressure on the UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has promised to stop the migration flow.

Starmer is said to be negotiating with French President Emmanuel Macron that the migrant boats will be sent back to France in exchange for asylum seekers with family ties in the UK.

France is also considering stopping boats with migrants that are near the French coast and that have not yet made it out to open water.
