Nearly 17,000 people died in a total of 358 different natural disasters last year. Over 110 million people were affected.
The death toll is well below the average for the past 20 years, the Belgian organization CRED states in its annual report. Between 2005 and 2024, an average of 57,000 people died each year, reports Vetenskapsradion.
Earthquakes claimed the most victims, and in 2025 Afghanistan and Myanmar were particularly hard hit by powerful tremors that caused many fatalities. Floods and storms also claimed thousands of lives last year.
