Australia shipped a record amount of gold to the USA in January, according to the Australian statistics agency.
The gold export amounted to a total of 4.6 billion Australian dollars, equivalent to approximately 30 billion Swedish kronor. This is the highest amount since 1995, when statistics on exports began to be recorded.
Australia usually exports its gold to countries in the Asian region, but the recent turmoil on the global markets for precious metals has disrupted the normal trade flows.
According to Bloomberg, the large export in January can also be linked to fears that new tariffs may be introduced from the USA's side.
