Former footballer Roberto Carlos has undergone heart surgery in Brazil, Spanish sports daily AS reports.

The 52-year-old sought treatment for a blood clot in his leg, but a full-body X-ray revealed that the former left-back had heart problems. Carlos then underwent emergency surgery.

"Now I am okay and under close observation," he tells AS.

Carlos played for Real Madrid between 1996 and 2007 and is currently an ambassador for the club. The Brazilian also played for clubs such as Inter and Fenerbahce before hanging up his boots in 2016.
