Curtis Jones was the first sloppy player at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Englishman fumbled the ball in his own half in the 14th minute, Real Madrid snatched it back and, voila, it was 1-0 to the home team after Brahim Díaz set up goalscorer Kylian Mbappé.
Jones' mistake was nothing compared to Josep Martínez's huge blunder just under ten minutes later. The Inter goalkeeper received a pass at his feet and was about to dribble when Real's Federico Valverde came charging in. It didn't go any further, the feint failed and Valverde knocked it into the goal for 2-0.
Carlos Augusto reduced the deficit with fifteen minutes left to play, but Real held on.
If Kylian Mbappé had a great start to the Champions League season, things were not going so well for his younger brother Ethan Mbappé. The 19-year-old played until Lille's 1-0 goal, but his luck didn't last. Not only did visiting Real Betis turn a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 victory, but in the second half Ethan Mbappé was also sent off after elbowing an opponent in the face.
More fun then for Manchester City and Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker came close to making it 1-0 away against Porto in the first half, but a great save from Diogo Costa stopped it. Instead, Haaland struck twice after the break. At the start of the second half, he headed it in, this time without a chance for Costa, for 1-0. In added time, he then scored the final goal to make it 2-0.
