The reading movement receives the award for having "made remarkable contributions to children's and young people's reading over a quarter of a century," as the justification reads.
"Those who have access to a language with which to understand the world often also find it easier to interpret their surroundings. The reading movement's work on young people's understanding of text and images therefore strengthens not only young people but also democracy," says Lena From, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, in a press release.
The Bernadotte Prize was established in 2023 by the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, the Swedish Academy of Letters, the Swedish Academy of Music, the Swedish Academy and the Royal Gustav Adolf Academy of Swedish Folk Culture. The prize money is 200,000 kronor.
