Hundreds of mourners have arrived at the church to pay their respects to Mladic. Many wore T-shirts paying tribute to him, and Serbian flags and banners with tributes were put up in the area.

The ceremony has been met with sharp condemnation. EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos canceled a planned visit to Serbia, saying that “the glorification surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the EU path is based.”

Mladic died at the end of August. Shortly afterwards, it was announced that he would receive a state funeral. Mladic was 84 years old and served a life sentence until his death.

Around 100,000 people were killed and 2.2 million people were displaced during the 1992-1995 war.
