Teammate Mikael Backlund is team captain at home in Calgary and was gold captain in Three Crowns' World Championship team 2018.
He becomes assistant team captain, just like Mika Zibanejad, assistant team captain in New York Rangers and World Championship gold medalist 2018.
Rasmus Andersson made his debut in Three Crowns in Four Nations in February and makes his World Championship debut tonight against Slovakia.
So he was surprised when the question came.
It's not something you expect. You're just looking forward to coming home and playing, and then you get the question. It's a great honor. But it doesn't just fall on me, we have many big leaders, says Andersson who was team captain in Czech Hockey Games last week.
National team captain Sam Hallam about the captain's choice:
Rasmus is a wonderfully outgoing personality who opens up the room and has a lot of energy. He took direct responsibility last week both on the hockey and social planes.
Mikael Backlund about the reversed roles from the club team Calgary:
I had a good chat with Sam, we haven't really gotten to know each other, and I said do what you feel. I support Rasmus and he always supports me away in Calgary, so I'll give it back to him.
Backlund has not been able to train for two days since his equipment has been delayed, but it was in place and he could complete the short match warm-up around lunchtime.
Sweden's first match in the home World Championship, against Slovakia, has a face-off at 20.20.
