The number of cases where people cross railway tracks at prohibited places despite an approaching train increased sharply last year, reports TV4 News.

Train staff have alerted to the growing problem and the Swedish Transport Administration also notes a greater increase in illegal track running in recent years. The track running leads to severe delays and is associated with mortal danger, emphasizes train driver Siv Rönnholm to the TV channel.

Often we approach 200 kilometers per hour and the braking distance for a speeding train is long, she says to TV4.

In 2023, just over 13,300 incidents with unauthorized persons on the track were reported. Last year, the corresponding figure had increased by 50 percent, to 20,148 cases, according to the Swedish Transport Administration. Last year, the track running caused a total delay of over 3,200 hours.
