Rail Traffic Deaths Rise, Majority Linked to Suicides

Last year, 112 people died in rail traffic, which is nine more than the year before. The majority of the deaths were suicides, according to statistics from the authority Trafikanalys.

Totally, 99 suicide incidents were reported in rail traffic during 2024 – that is, within the railway, tramway, and subway. It is the highest number since 2019 and the vast majority of cases were registered at the railway.

Statistics from Trafikanalys show that 92 of the total 112 deaths in rail traffic last year occurred in connection with suicide.

During the past year, 69 serious accidents also occurred in rail traffic. Most of them, 58, occurred at the railway, while 10 accidents occurred on the tramway and one in the subway.

In accidents related to rail traffic, 20 people were killed, which is three more than the year before. Men make up the larger proportion of the dead, both in suicides and in accidents.

26 people were also seriously injured in rail traffic accidents and 7 people were seriously injured in suicide incidents.
