AP describes Sunday's opening as a test, saying the crossing is being prepared for larger volumes of travel. Initially, only a "limited" number of Gazans will be allowed to cross on foot, writes The Jerusalem Post.
The crossing has been a bottleneck for supplies to war-torn Gaza. Opening the crossing, the only one that leads out of the strip without going through Israel, is part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.
In the first phase, only people with medical needs will be allowed to cross the border, according to the AFP news agency. The crossing is expected to open to more people on Monday.
Entry and exit permits are coordinated with Egypt, writes the Israeli authority Cogat.
Those wishing to pass will first have to undergo security checks. The process is monitored by the EU.
