Najem was convicted of incitement against a group of people after setting fire to Qurans at several protests together with Salwan Momika, who was shot dead in his apartment a year ago.
Najem left Sweden a few months after the murder, his lawyer Mark Safaryan told the newspaper.
He does not believe that Sweden can guarantee his safety.
He is now held in an asylum reception center in the United States awaiting the asylum process.
A decisive factor in his departure to the United States was a speech by Vice President JD Vance in which Vance criticized Sweden, the verdict, and called Momika and Najem Christian activists.
I was in contact with him quite recently, and he is now putting his hopes in JD Vance, Safaryan tells LT.
