With other chaotic football celebrations fresh in their minds, Paris police had prepared for riots in connection with the quarter-finals. But according to French media, Thursday night was marked by celebrations after France's World Cup qualification rather than brawls.

But unrest broke out elsewhere in connection with the match. In London, a police officer was taken to hospital with head injuries and four people were arrested after supporters and police clashed, according to AFP.

De Telegraaf reports rioting in Belgium and the Netherlands. In Antwerp, seven people were arrested when police were pelted with fireworks and bottles. In Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam, riot police were deployed to control large crowds.
