The King decided to give the Queen the award "for particularly significant humanitarian efforts over half a century," the court said in a press release, adding:
"The efforts are about supporting children who grow up in difficult circumstances without adult role models and children who are exposed to abuse. The Queen's social commitment also includes those affected by dementia."
The Seraphim Medal is Sweden's oldest medal of merit and is the only one whose royal portrait is not replaced when the throne changes. Therefore, it is adorned with the image of King Fredrik I, who reigned when the award was established in 1748.
