The Queen will be hospitalized over the weekend for observation and is said to be in good spirits.
The 86-year-old Queen Margrethe formally announced in her New Year's speech in 2023 that she would abdicate and hand over the throne to her son Frederik; he formally assumed the role of Head of State a few weeks later.
Queen Margrethe was born at Amalienborg Palace on 16 April 1940. Her parents were King Frederik and Queen Ingrid; her mother was from Sweden. The Queen is thus a cousin of Sweden's King Carl Gustaf.
In 1967, she married the French Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, who then became Prince Henrik. He died in 2018. The couple has two sons: King Frederik, married to Queen Mary, and Prince Joachim, married to Princess Marie.
Queen Margrethe is known as a royal who cares about tradition while always going her own way. She draws, paints, and sews and has participated in many exhibitions and created sets for ballet performances.
