This builds on Qatar's history of successfully hosting major international sports events, says the country's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin al-Thani in a statement.
Qatar was a controversial host for the football World Championship 2022 when the conditions for the country's many migrant workers came into focus. Amnesty and other human rights organizations reported that thousands of migrant workers lost their lives during the construction of the arenas and complexes where the tournament was held. According to Qatar, only 37 migrant workers died, of which only three deaths are said to have been work-related.
Those who will be awarded the Olympic Games 2036 will be decided later on. There is a basic idea that the games should rotate to different continents. In 2024, the games were held in Paris (Europe), in 2028 it will be Los Angeles (North America) and in 2032 it will be Brisbane (Oceania).
Countries no longer need to announce that they want to host the Olympics to be relevant as a host.
