Both Støre and Stubb have made it clear that they took the initiative for Tuesday's talks as representatives of their own countries.
But according to Putin, the conversation shows that "there are people in Europe who do not wish to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia and want to establish some form of constructive dialogue."
"We support all initiatives aimed at restoring full relations with European countries," Putin said.
Støre and Stubb's direct contact with Putin is the first in a long time between a European ally of Ukraine and Russia's supreme leader. The last time, as far as is known, was when French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to him in July last year.
