Putin wants to meet Trump

Russia's leader Vladimir Putin wants to meet his American colleague Donald Trump. It is impossible to resolve many issues, including the Ukraine crisis, without increased trust between Russia and the USA, says Putin.

His statement was made to journalists in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, where he said that he highly values the talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday between Russian and American representatives.

I believe that we have taken a first step to resume work in several areas where we have common interests.

Putin added that thorough preparations are required before a meeting with the US President "if it is to yield results".

Putin claimed at the same time that Russian forces had carried out a ground offensive from Russian Kursk into the Sumy region in Ukraine during the night to Wednesday.

The Russian President's statement is being questioned by Ukraine and several other countries. Ukraine's responsible for stopping disinformation, Andrij Kovalenko, said after the statement that a Russian reconnaissance unit had tried to cross the border but was stopped.

Putin's information about a large-scale Russian offensive is a lie, said Kovalenko.

Germany's Foreign Minister, the Green's Annalena Baerbock, noted again in a comment on the meeting between the US and Russia in Riyadh that "no one except Putin" wanted a Russian invasion war in Ukraine.

"We are working to strengthen Ukraine with all our might," she wrote in the statement.
