Russia's president Vladimir Putin has ordered his government to introduce new restrictions on foreign messaging apps from countries considered hostile.

This is reported by the Ukrainian intelligence service, according to Kyiv Independent.

The measure is part of a broader strategy to reduce Russia's dependence on technology from Western countries classified as hostile by Moscow.

According to the information, the messaging service WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is expected to be blocked.

Meta – the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp – was declared an "extremist organization" in Russia in 2022. WhatsApp is the only one of the company's platforms that is still available in the country.
