A meeting between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump has been proposed for next month. The aim is to reach a deal that benefits Russia, according to the newspaper.
Discussions about a potential meeting are underway, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed to the WSJ. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not be invited to attend.
Putin reportedly made the proposal during a phone call with Trump on October 9 - the same conversation that resulted in an agreement to release hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel to US and international markets.
At the same time, the US president decided earlier this week to exempt Russia from sanctions related to fuel exports.
Putin is now said to want to take advantage of this opening from the United States and achieve a favorable outcome in negotiations on Ukraine.
