During the exercise, a ballistic missile was launched from the Plesetsk launch site in northwestern Russia, an intercontinental missile of the Sineva type was launched from a submarine in the Barents Sea, and two bomber planes of the Tu-95 type launched cruise missiles.
The exercise tested the skills of the military leadership, the Kremlin states in a statement.
The head of the military's general staff, General Valerij Gerasimov, reported to Putin via video link that the exercises were intended to simulate "procedures for approving the use of nuclear weapons".
