Russia can continue with its restrictions on the country's nuclear weapons for another year, despite an agreement with the US expiring on February 5 next year, according to President Vladimir Putin.

This is about the so-called "New Start" agreement between the countries that limits the number of nuclear weapons. The agreement is the last of its kind regarding arms control between the great powers.

Putin says he expects the US to follow Russia's example. If the agreement ceases, it would have "negative consequences for global stability", according to the president.
