The feminist Russian punk group Pussy Riot will play at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm on April 24. The concert is based on the book “Riot Days” by Maria “Masha” Aljochina, one of the group’s members, which depicts political oppression in Russia.
In December, a Moscow court classified Pussy Riot as an extremist organization. The decision means that the group’s activities are banned in Russia and that anyone expressing support for the group can be prosecuted, The Art Newspaper reported. Earlier this fall, another Moscow court sentenced some of the group’s members to long prison terms for “spreading false information” about the Russian military. The members were sentenced in their absence.
