A year ago, it was Tottenham who lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the football Super Cup final.
Now it was Premier League rivals Aston Villa who were beaten by the French side.
Star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute, making it 1-0. Aston Villa equalised in the final minutes of the first half and then had several good chances to take the lead in the second half.
Instead, Désiré Doué stepped up and decided the final for PSG.
Swedish World Cup defender Lindelöf played the entire match for Villa.
The match was refereed by Somali Omar Artan, who was denied entry to the United States this summer and kicked out of the World Cup.
The European Super Cup is decided in a match between the previous season's Champions League and Europa League winners, both tournaments organised by the Union of European Football Associations (Uefa).
