The background is a phone call that the Thai Prime Minister recently had with a former leader in the neighboring country of Cambodia.

The conversation, which was leaked, is said to have been an attempt to dampen a border conflict between the two countries.

That Paetongtarn Shinawatra during the conversation called the Cambodian "uncle" and described one of Thailand's military leaders as an "opponent" has however provoked strong reactions.

One of the parties in the Prime Minister's government coalition has turned its back on her and accused the 38-year-old Prime Minister of currying favor with Cambodia. This has made her now only have fragile support in the National Assembly.
