Seven demonstrators were arrested when they entered the zoo to protest against the culling. The park was closed on Tuesday due to "operational reasons", which the activists interpreted as the zoo being closed to cull the baboons.

The decision to cull the animals was announced as early as February last year. They then said that it was due to overcrowding in their enclosure, which is said to have caused "an increase in conflicts that led to injuries to the animals" and that there was no other alternative than to cull the baboons.

Several demonstrations have been held in the city as a result of the decision. Animal rights organizations have also filed a police report against the park, as they believe that the park's reason for the culling is not reasonable.

"We know that many will find it difficult to understand this decision, that it has irritated, upset or enraged them," the zoo management writes in a statement.
