Ann Widdecombe was murdered at her home in Devon in southwest England on July 8, according to prosecutors, by a 28-year-old man who is suspected of driving 500 miles from Rotherham to carry out the murder.
The man allegedly entered Widdecombe's house while she was eating lunch and hit her 21 times in the head with a hammer. He then allegedly took her wallet. In total, he was inside the house for only two minutes.
The motive is still unclear, but police are investigating whether there is a terrorist connection.
The 78-year-old Ann Widdecombe was a spokesperson on migration issues for the right-wing populist Reform Party and was previously a minister in John Major's Conservative government in the 1990s.
