Daniela Klette is already in custody for several armed robberies and attempted murders. German prosecutors have now brought new charges against the 67-year-old, who was arrested in 2024 in Berlin, where she had been living undercover and giving math lessons to neighborhood children.
Among the new charges, according to Germanpublic service media and the Süddeutsche Zeitung, is a 1991 attack on the US embassy in the former West German capital of Bonn, where foreign missions were still located at the time. Klette is charged with 20 counts of attempted murder after, according to prosecutors, she and two accomplices fired at least 250 machine gun rounds at the embassy building.
Bombings and kidnappings
The left-wing extremist terrorist group the Red Army Faction (RAF), also known as the Baader-Meinhof gang, terrorized West Germany from the early 1970s, with bombings, kidnappings and murders.
Between 1971 and 1993, more than 30 people are believed to have been murdered by the group, including then-Deutsche Bank CEO Alfred Herrhausen, Attorney General Siegfried Buback and employers' leader Hanns Martin Schleyer.
When the RAF was disbanded in 1998, Daniela Klette and two male accomplices went underground, and she has been described in the media over the years as Germany's most hunted woman.
Gold and armor-piercing bullet
Upon arrest in 2024, the police found, among other things, automatic weapons, an armor-piercing bullet, over a kilo of gold and the equivalent of over 1.5 million kronor in cash hidden behind a partition wall in a closet in Klette's home in the Kreuzberg district of the German capital.
Jammers, mobile phones and several different ID documents were also seized.
