The USA has presented its own draft of the UN resolution ahead of the three-year anniversary on February 24 of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. In contrast to the previously presented draft supported by Europe, no mention is made of occupied areas or Russian aggression.
In the very brief American draft, sorrow is expressed over "the tragic loss of life in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict". It also calls for "a swift end to the conflict", including "addressing its root causes". The latter was added at Russia's request.
The USA "further calls for a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia", it says. Russia's UN ambassador Vasilij Nebenzia sees the American draft as a good step.
The outcome of the vote in the UN General Assembly, expected to take place on Monday, is not binding.
