The government wants a new special education system, and there is now a proposal on how it could be designed.
The new programme is intended to replace the current special education teacher training and special needs educator training. The professional roles overlap, but usually a special education teacher provides support directly in the classroom, while a special needs educator has an advisory role at school level.
In future, all special education teachers should be able to work closely with students in classrooms, but also have the skills to work in areas such as student health. Since the current two training programmes and professional roles are difficult to distinguish, it is more practical to have one programme, according to the proposal.
The new programme will have four specialisations, based on the students' ages.
