Today, the regions are responsible for providing the necessary medical resources. Municipalities are not allowed to hire doctors for patient-facing clinical work in services they are responsible for, such as nursing homes and home healthcare.

"Demographic developments mean that municipal healthcare will have to take care of increasingly severe care needs. It is therefore extremely important that municipalities are given the opportunity to strengthen medical expertise," says Minister of Health Elisabet Lann (KD) in a press release.

The proposal is intended to complement the current system. The regions will continue to be responsible for providing primary-care physicians.
