April Unemployment Rises to 8.9 Percent Due to Seasonal Factors

Unemployment rose to 8.9 percent in April, according to the Statistics Bureau (SCB). This can be compared to 8.5 percent the previous month. But according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed figures, unemployment stood at 8.6 percent – an unchanged level compared to the previous month according to revised figures.

At the same time, the employment rate, i.e. the employed in relation to the population, rose to 69.0 percent – up from 68.9 percent a year earlier.

"Among young people aged 15–24, the number of unemployed amounted to 157,000 and the unemployment rate was 22.8 percent. Compared to adjacent months, it is a decrease in both the number and the proportion of unemployed young people", writes SCB.
