The Swedish Prison and Probation Service will review security following an attempted suicide by an inmate at Kumla Prison and may need to replace bunk beds in Swedish prisons, reports P4 Örebro.

An investigation into the suicide attempt, which took place at the institution last fall, found that the bunk beds with stairs posed a suicide risk.

"Something needs to be done. We need to look more closely at the issue," said Jacques Mwepu, head of correctional services at Kumlaanstalten, to P4 Örebro.

The bunk beds were introduced over five years ago due to the double occupancy at the institution, which means that inmates have to share a cell. The beds are built by staff and inmates at Kumlaanstalten, and they are used around the country.

However, there is no concrete decision yet on how to proceed. Replacing or renovating the beds would be an extensive task, with some inmates who would have to be temporarily relocated, according to Jacques Mwepu.
