"With great sorrow, I have today received the news that my sister, Princess Birgitta, has passed away. My sister was a colorful and straightforward person who will be deeply missed by me and my family. Together with my entire family, I am sending my condolences today to Princess Birgitta's children and grandchildren," says King Carl XVI Gustaf in a press release.

Filmmaker Jens Lind released the documentary "Sessan – a royal saga" about Birgitta's life in 2022.

I'm completely shocked, we spoke on the phone just the other day. We had close contact. There was nothing that indicated this would happen, he says to TT.

The Expert: "Very Humble"

Princess Birgitta passed away on Mallorca, where she had lived since the mid-1990s. She leaves behind three children with families. Princess Birgitta's husband, Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern, passed away in 2016.

She was a fantastically fun person. Very humble. But she didn't thrive so much in Sweden, instead, she thrived best in southern latitudes, so to speak, says royal expert Roger Lundgren to TT.

The King has decided that flags will be flown at half-mast at Drottningholms Palace and Haga Palace on Thursday, announces the Royal Court.

The Royal Family's Program Continues

The Royal Family's program for the week and next week will be carried out as planned, says the Royal Court to TT. However, Queen Silvia's participation in the opening of an exhibition at the City Museum in Stockholm on Wednesday was cancelled, reports Expressen.

The three other "Haga sisters" are Margaretha, 90 years old, Desirée, 86, and Christina, 81. The youngest in the sibling group is King Carl XVI Gustaf, 78 years old.

Princess Birgitta will be buried at the Royal Cemetery in Hagaparken, according to her own wish. The burial will take place in the presence of the princess's family.

Due to Birgitta's passing, SVT will show the documentary "Sessan – a royal saga" from 2022 both on Wednesday and Thursday. The film by Jens Lind is an intimate portrait of the princess and is also available on SVT Play.
