Several of Prince's 1980s hits have received a major boost on Spotify after the final episode of the series "Stranger Things".

Both "When Doves Cry" and "Purple Rain" are heard at crucial moments in the thrilling resolution of the sci-fi horror drama, and since the final episode was released on New Year's Eve, streaming of "Purple Rain" has increased by 243 percent globally and a whopping 577 percent among Generation Z, writes Variety.

According to series co-creator Ross Duffer, the choice of music was no coincidence.

We've never discussed a song choice as much as we did for that moment. What made it extra exciting was that Prince's estate doesn't usually give permission for the music from the 1984 film "Purple Rain" to be used in other contexts.

"We were told it was a far-fetched gamble, so we just kept our fingers crossed," his twin brother Matt Duffer tells the Netflix forum Tudum.
