It was unclear until the last minute whether the prince himself intended to appear in court on Tuesday. But at 8:30 local time, the 40-year-old, who resides in the USA, showed up at the court in central London.
The dispute over whether King Charles' youngest son should have the right to state-funded personal protection when he and his family visit the UK has been ongoing since 2020, when he sued the British state.
The prince does not speak in court, reports British Sky News, but sends notes to one of his legal representatives. Through his lawyer Shaheed Fatima, Harry announces that he believes he has been subjected to unfair and inadequate treatment.
Harry, who lost his protection in connection with his dramatic departure from the royal family, believes that he and his family are at great risk every time they visit the UK. Among other things, his legal team points out that the terrorist network al-Qaida has called for his murder, according to Sky News.
This prevents him and his American wife Meghan from traveling there to the extent they would like, according to Harry.
"The UK is my home. It is central to my children's heritage", he said in a written statement in 2023.
Harry's claims were denied a judicial review last year, but now they get a new chance. The appeal is being heard in London on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Wednesday's proceedings taking place behind closed doors due to confidential evidence.
