In July 2022, the girl was admitted to hospital with bleeding wounds to her lower abdomen after what was described as a cycling accident. Doctors suspected she had been subjected to female genital mutilation. The girl's parents were later arrested, and charges were brought against a third person.

Nyköping District Court found that someone had cut the girl's genitals and concluded there was substantial evidence she had been subjected to genital mutilation, even though it was not possible to determine exactly what had been done. It was also not possible to determine who had performed the procedure.

In December last year, the mother was sentenced to three years and three months in prison for aggravated assault. The father and another person were acquitted. Now the mother has been acquitted by the Court of Appeal, Expressen writes.
