Agents, club managers, coaches and players were busy right up until the last minute on Tuesday evening.
Some deals were closed just before the deadline, others fell through after protracted negotiations in which no agreement could be reached. When the clock struck midnight on Wednesday night, it was clear: Never before during a transfer window has so much money flowed in and out of clubs in the English top division.
45 billion in circulation
The bill ended up at 3.46 billion pounds. That's equivalent to around 45 billion kronor. That's an increase of just under five billion kronor compared with last summer's transfers.
Worst in class was, not entirely unexpectedly, Manchester City, where player turnover has been high since Enzo Maresca took over as manager after Pep Guardiola.
Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández became - at least for now - the final piece of the puzzle in Maresca's new build. But it cost £125 million. A touch on Alexander Isak's record transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool a year ago.
Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye are three other high-profile - and expensive - signings, while the sales of Savio, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez and James Trafford have balanced the books.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, all with fresh managers - Xabi Alonso, Andoni Iraola and Robert De Zerbi (who took office last spring) - have also bought and sold for huge sums.
All have paid at least £100 million for a player.
Lift for Larsson?
The national team's head coach Graham Potter, who lives in Brighton, may plan a visit to Craven Cottage on the Thames - if he now has a renewed interest in Hugo Larsson.
The midfielder did not get a place in the World Cup squad, but perhaps the move to Fulham can provide the boost Potter wants to see to get the Scanian back into the national team.
Larsson, who according to German media reluctantly left Frankfurt, cost the London club 21 million pounds, almost 280 million kronor.
Potter can now follow twelve Swedish players in the Premier League and three World Cup players in the second division - Viktor Johansson, Jacob Widell Zetterström and Hjalmar Ekdal.
