An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 has occurred in northern Afghanistan, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

It erupted at a depth of 28 kilometers in the mountains a few kilometers from the city of Khulm during the night of Monday, local time. Khulm is not far from the large city of Mazar-e Sharif.

Initially, the USGS stated that the depth was 10 kilometers.

The earthquake was also reportedly felt in the capital Kabul, among other places, AFP writes.

It is unclear whether the earthquake caused any significant damage.

Over 2,200 people died when a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on August 31.
