Two singles matches and one doubles match were underway when the power went out, according to ATP. On the main court, Grigor Dimitrov had a lead over Jacob Fearnley with 6–4, 5–4 just before the match was stopped.

According to Spanish Marca, chaos broke out among the spectators when they were to be evacuated from the stands. And when the barriers at the entrance stopped functioning, many found themselves in darkness in the catacombs.

Red Eléctrica, which operates the Spanish power grid, reports that they are working to restore the power – which is on its way back in the northern and southern parts of Spain and Portugal, according to the operator.

When the power did not return after four hours at the ATP and WTA tennis tournament in Madrid, the organizer made the decision to cancel the day's play.

Matches were planned – under artificial light – late into the evening.

Only three matches were played before the power went out. World number four Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic with 6–4, 6–2, and teenage sensation Mirra Andrejeva also reached the quarterfinals via 6–1, 6–4 against Julija Starodubtseva.

In the men's tournament, Matteo Arnaldi advanced after 6–3, 6–4 against Damir Dzumhur.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka and world number two Iga Swiatek had their matches postponed until Tuesday.
