"To continue in this role means a lot to me. I feel both great pride and great responsibility," Graham Potter told the Swedish Football Association's website.
Englishman Graham Potter took over in October after Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson was fired following an unsuccessful qualifying game.
Now Potter will continue regardless of how things go in the World Cup play-off against Ukraine in Valencia on March 26. If there is a victory there, a qualifying final awaits against the winner of the Poland–Albania match in Solna on March 31.
“Big day”
"It's a big day for me and a fantastic opportunity to do something important going forward. I've had a good first period as Sweden's head coach and have enjoyed myself very much with everyone. Sweden is a football country with a proud history of teams that have reached major tournaments and competed there, which we want to return to," says Potter.
Jon Dahl Tomasson had to leave in mid-October after a direct place in the World Cup was out of reach after just four matches - Sweden had then suffered three losses and had one draw.
Potter coached the national team in the final two qualifiers against Switzerland (1–4) and Slovenia (1–1). Sweden finished last in their group, but earned a place in the World Cup play-offs thanks to a successful Nations League performance in 2024.
“A sense of security”
National team manager Kim Källström on the extension with Potter:
"Graham has already made a strong impression in his short time here, with his wonderful personality and professional attitude, and we look forward to continuing our journey together. His coaching background is based on a wide and unique range of experiences, everything from Swedish football to high international level with the complexity that exists there. The fact that this is now clear gives us a sense of security for the upcoming play-offs," says Källström.
The World Cup finals will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. If Sweden goes there, they will be in a group with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia.
