Portuguese Police Clash With Housing Protesters as Camps Are Cleared in Lisbon and Porto

Portuguese police have stormed tent camps in Lisbon and Porto set up in protest against soaring housing prices. Thirteen people have been arrested, and several are reported to have been injured.

Clashes erupted after riot police with dogs stormed the camps early Sunday. Police reportedly used batons and said some protesters threw bottles and paint at officers who tried to tear down the tents.

A total of 13 people were arrested in the two cities, and 13 police officers were injured.

An “unspecified number” of civilians were also injured, according to a statement. The activist group Acampada Lisboa said more than 30 protesters were injured, ten of whom required hospital treatment.

The camps had been set up after peaceful demonstrations against soaring housing prices on Saturday. The protests were inspired by a similar movement in neighboring Spain.
