Portugal will recognize an independent Palestinian state on Sunday, announces the country's foreign department. Already in July this year, Lisbon announced that a recognition was to be expected, due to "the extremely alarming development of the conflict" in Gaza.

The message comes ahead of the UN's upcoming general assembly next week, when about a dozen other countries are also expected to recognize Palestine as an independent state.
