According to the army, its opponents, the RSF paramilitary forces, have dispatched so-called kamikaze drones against an airbase and other facilities in Port Sudan. The damage on the ground is described as limited.

The metropolis on the Red Sea coast serves as a kind of alternative capital for the army-backed government. It moved there from the capital Khartum when the catastrophic civil war broke out in 2023.

The UN organizations have also moved their headquarters there. A significant part of the millions of people who have been driven into flight are also located there.

The army regained control over the contested Khartum a few weeks ago. The RSF, which has formed its own political administration, has since then stepped up drone attacks against more parts of the country.

The war broke out as a result of a split in the military junta that seized power in Sudan after the long-standing dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown. The country is essentially divided between the warring parties. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and up to 14 million people have been driven into flight within and out of the country.
