Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Madrid as Pope Leo XIV arrived in his popemobile. 16 enormous flower carpets - meticulously composed of around 30,000 flowers - decorated the half-kilometer-long processional route.

"Long live the Pope!" the crowd shouted.

The most eager slept under the open sky to secure a good spot for the Mass. Ignacio from Cádiz in southern Spain was one of hundreds who happily sacrificed his own comfort.

"Jesus slept on stones," he told the Spanish news agency EFE.

Around 600,000 young people were already present at Saturday evening's opening service in Madrid, which is the first outing on the papal tour in Spain in 15 years.
