Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Madrid as Pope Leo XIV arrived in his popemobile. 16 enormous flower carpets - meticulously composed of around 30,000 flowers - decorated the half-kilometer-long processional route.
"Long live the Pope!" shouted the crowd.
The most eager slept under the open sky to secure a good spot for the Mass. Ignacio from Cádiz in southern Spain was one of hundreds who happily sacrificed their own comfort.
"Jesus slept on stones," he told the Spanish news agency EFE.
Around 600,000 young people had already attended Saturday night's opening service in Madrid, which is the first stop on the first papal tour of Spain in 15 years.
