Pope Leo XIV Has Cancerous Lung Nodule Removed in Successful Surgery

Pope Leo XIV had cancer in his right lung and had part of it removed on Tuesday, the Vatican said, describing the operation as “successful and according to plan.”

The operation concerned a lump in the lung, a so-called nodule, which was discovered at an early stage and was “well-defined,” the pope said on Sunday.

Early Tuesday evening, the Vatican said the operation had gone well, without providing any further details.

A few hours later, it was announced that part of the right lung had been removed after doctors determined during the procedure that the lump was cancerous, in line with the tests conducted before the surgery.

The pope was in the operating room for about three hours, with the procedure itself lasting 90 minutes, according to the Vatican, which on Monday canceled all the pope’s appearances and other engagements until October 20.

The American pope has no known health problems and is known to be physically active, with swimming and tennis on his schedule.
