Vatican cardinals and high-ranking officials are getting new salaries, in Pope Leo's birthday present to his employees.
The ten and eight percent increases, respectively, return the Vatican's salaries to pre-pandemic levels. In 2021, after the Vatican's coffers ran dry, Pope Francis cut the salaries of all cardinals and high-ranking officials by those percentages.
Monday's increase applies, according to the Pope's announcement earlier this month, but not retroactively.
According to AFP, the cardinals in Rome earn on average the equivalent of 50,000 to 56,000 kronor a month.
