Pope Leo XIV discharged from hospital after lung surgery, returns to Vatican

Pope Leo XIV returned to the Vatican on Saturday after being discharged from hospital, where he underwent lung surgery.

The 71-year-old pope was hospitalized for five days after it was suddenly announced that he needed lung surgery. He had been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer.

A large crowd waited outside Agostino Gemelli Hospital in Rome and welcomed the pope with cheers and applause before he got into a waiting car that took him home to the Vatican.
