AI is the greatest challenge facing humanity today, writes Pope Leo XIV in his first, so-called encyclical. In it, he criticizes the concentration of power and data in the hands of a few people in the private sector.
“A more moral AI is not enough if that morality is determined by a few,” the pope writes.
He condemns the “culture of power” that drives AI development, especially in remote methods of warfare. Entrusting irreversible, lethal decisions to AI systems is not permissible, he writes.
“If technology promises liberation, yet produces new forms of global subordination, it contradicts the fundamental principle of human dignity,” the text states.
