Pope Francis will be honored during the final stage of the Giro d'Italia on June 1, announces the competition organizer for the cycling classic.
"It will be a very special moment", says Umberto Cairo, chairman of RCS, which organizes the "Giro".
Even before the Pope's death on Easter Monday, it was decided that this year's final stage would be run through the Vatican City, where the Catholic Church's main church, St. Peter's Basilica, is located.
The Giro d'Italia starts in Durres, Albania on May 9 with stage 1 of 21.
